Landscaping an aquatic turtle tank?

I have a Red Eared Slider in a 55 gallon tank.What's the best substrate to use (besides no substrate, as I want it to look as natural as possible)? Also, how can I create a natural looking hill with the substrate, to create a sort of platform/basking area? Which fake plants, if any, should I include in the setup? Etc.....
